Revised Itinery - South Island

So what do you think of this latest June 2013 itinery folks? I tweaked it a little and need your help haha

Land in Christchurch early in the morning of the 18th.

18th - drive to Hokitika or Greymouth? Which would you suggest to stay o'night?

19th - drive to Franz Josef or Fox? Again which would you suggest?

20th - drive to Wanaka and stay o'night.

21st - drive to Milford Sound and stay o'night in a cabin there.

22nd to 27th to Queenstown and base ourselves there for skiing etc

28th - drive to Christchurch

29th - fly out lunchtime

Mount Cook - and ensure you don't end up booking a place in Twizel or Tekapo by accident.

Any thoughts now? suggestions?

One concern I do have is what would the Mount Cook Road be like at the end June when we will be driving along it?

Is it likely to be open and safely passable?

Many Thanks to those that have assisted with this :)

This looks great - so pleased you have included Aoraki/Mt Cook :)

The road to Aoraki follows the valley floor with next to no elevation gain. It's a stunning drive with the lake to your right and the mountains appearing more and more huge as you approach them.

The roads you need to worry about with snow closures (doesn't happen often in June, but it isn't impossible) are the alpine passes - Arthur's Pass on the 18th, Haast Pass on the 20th, Lindis Pass on the 27th and Burke's Pass on the 28th.

There will be frost overnight and early morning (often it will ice up about 7am) so best not drive before 10am or after dark on country roads.

You have a great trip planned, enjoy :)

Hey thanks Wanaka - all the advice has been invaluable.

I have been to the SI before but it was 20 years ago, so its all new again haha

I have been wondering on a few itinery options though -

1) Don't stay overnight at Hokitika and replace with 2 nights at Franz Joseph ?

2) Leave Queenstown a day early and have 2 nights at Mt Cook?

Is there much to do there? Snow near town? Skiing?

Thoughts?

Yep, if you are up to a long day's drive go all the way to Franz.... it will allow time for a heli-flight over the glaciers or a soak in the hot pools.

I love Aoraki, the scenery and hiking in good weather is just lovely... but it can be a bit less exciting if clouded in. No skiing at Aoraki - I guess the nearest ski-field is back down the road at Ohau.

If wanting exceptional skiing with breathtaking scenery then Wanaka is THE place http://www.treblecone.com/

As in there are no other options that are really anywhere near as good as those two.
