Christmas on the South Island

Hi I'll b arriving on the South Island on the 15th and plan to do the queen Charlotte track and Abel Tasman park for a few days. I need to make my way south after that but not sure whether to do east or west coast first. Where would be a good place to go for Christmas day and Boxing Day? Somewhere with a bit of life for backpackers? We plan to get as far as Dunedin or Queenstown for New Year as they're too far south to make it for Christmas.

You are a tad vague on details - it is hard to plan an arrival around Christmas when we don't know the starting date.

You arrive Dec 15th and then??

24 arrive somehere

25 celebrate Christmas

26 Boxing Day

if you fill in the days you plan to do the QC and also the AB we can then possibly help fill in the remaining days.

Also, are you driving or taking the bus?

The more you tell us, the better we can help you :)

Nothing is set in stone. We are arriving early on the 15th so going straight to the queen Charlotte track, leaving on the 17th maybe and heading to Abel Tasman, do two days of walking then leave on the 20th.

That's as far as we have planned ahead. So now we want to figure out if it makes more sense to go south via the east or west coast. The next four days of the itinerary are flexible depending on where we ultimately want to end up for Christmas but the problem is that we haven't a clue where we want to be!

You say you don't want to go as far as Queenstown, yet the normal route from Nelson would be:

20th. Punakaiki,

21st. Glaciers (2-3 N)

24th. Wanaka - stay here for Christmas?

Otherwise:

20th. Punakaiki

21st. Arthurs Pass (1-2N)

22nd or 23rd.. Christchurch (1-2N)

23rd or 24th. Akaroa -stay for Xmas, or return to Chch.
