we would be making our way up to auckland from queenstown - plan to leave christchurch on march 5th - drive to picton, take the ferry to wellington. shoudl we overnight in wellington before moving ahead or would there be a recommended place close to wellington that we can stay overnight in?
plus any sugestions on LOTR locations/things to do - on the way from wellington to akl

Chch to Wellington is an 8.5 hour journey - surely enough for one day.
And if wanting LOTR, Wellington offers some great tours.

thx! uep it would be crazy to rush it more. we actually have a fortnight in nz and seem to planned more than half the time in and around queenstown, so now getting worried planning the rest of the trip
Wellington is a fabulous city in fine weather. Lots to do, including the National museum, Te Papa. & of course the Weta Cave! There are some LOTR sights on Mt Victoria that you can easily explore without a tour. Do schedule at least one full day there.
