Wellington - New Years Eve 2008

Can anyone with local knowledge confirm that there will be the "usual" fireworks display in/around the harbour on NYE?

And wondering if (like past visits at the same time of year-albeit more than a few years ago) many shops/restaurants/cafes might be closed during the period 28th Dec - 1st Jan.

In saying that - I wonder if shops/retailers might be more than happy to stay open- to try and get more $$ through the registers? Welly can be a bit quiet at holiday time.....

Actually as far as I know we don't have New Years Eve fireworks usually., We have them in Guy Fawkes and at Chinese New Year. I checked the Council website for you and they would have mentioned it if we did. There is a waterfront party which is free concert with quite good singers the Beat Girls you could go to if you like outdoor fun: feelinggreat.co.nz/events/festivals/2680-new…

Yes it will be a bit quiet 28th-1st... Lots of people go somewhere else. It's a nice time for browsing and shopping and lingering in cafes though and walking the waterfront.

Typically though xmas day is dead and boxing day is very quiet (apart from Farmers and Briscoes kicking off Boxing day sales)- there will be more cafes and restaurants closed those days - then a lot open again for that in between time till New Years day when a bunch close again that day! By the 28th a lot would be open (apart from it's a sunday so suspect smaller independent retailers may remain closed) so think you'll be ok actually by 29th - the shops will definetly get going again on 29th as it's a Monday and people work then in offices too.

Have fun!
