Taupo or Queenstown for VFM adventure sports

We are a group of 4-5 people just arrived from India to Wellington for a 2 year stay

We are planning to do some adventure sports over the long Easter weekend

We are planning to stay for 5 nights in a hostel type accommodation, if available or else a hotel as we just need a place to sleep.

The main adventures we are looking for is Para gliding, Sky diving, white river rafting, 1 day hiking etc. in addition to what the city has to offer

Which would be a better VFM destination for us ?

Queenstown or Taupo ?

Secondly can we easily drive down from Wellington to Taupo in a hired car ?

(Is it recommended ? Is the route very hilly and treacherous ?)

Thanks for advising

Considering you can drive to one and have to fly to the other, it does seem somewhat odd that VFM is even mentioned.

Save Queenstown for another time when you have time to explore in depth - with just 5 days Taupo will do fine.

How is your driving? Are you confident and experienced behind the wheel? If so the drive to Taupo is fine. If you have doubts then take the bus.

Check discounted accommodation on www.wotif.com

Hostels are the most affordable option, followed by motels.

Enjoy :)

Thanks for advising

When writing VFM, I meant that the place should have most of the sports I am looking for and similar activity experience.

The airfare will only be a small portion of the entire budget for the trip as we are budgeting to spend 1500$ per person.

If the activities experience is much better in QT, we dont mind spending an extra 100$ in air fare.

How busy will Taupo be during the Easter weekend ? I am told that Queenstown will be very heavily booked during that weekend.

Thanks for advising
