Travelling from Auckland to Rotorua and on to Napier

Hello

I am just looking for some info as we have a few nights in Auckland and just wonder if anyone has any suggestions of stop off points/points of interest on our way down to Rotoura where we are staying for one night and then on to Napier.

It looks like about 3 hours for each sector.

Any info would be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Annette

Hi annettet,

There is quite alot to see in and around Rotorua. Perhaps you can fit things in either side of your night in Rotorua. We stayed there 3 nights and visited Orakei Korak thermal area - a wonderful silica terrace that runs down into a lake. Very beautiful and full of hot water pools, geysers and bubbling mud pools. Also near by is Wai-o-Tapu - a thermal park with the Lady Knox geyser that goes off every day at 10.15 (with a little help), very impressive. The thermal park is full of craters and mud pools and colourful silica terraces.

Hi Annette, It is around 3 hours drive each sector.

Wai-o-Tapu - a thermal park with the Lady Knox geyser is south of Rotorua on your way to Taupo. You need to be there by 10am to see the Lady Knox go off.

Orakei Korako is a further half hour or so to the turn off on your right south of Rotorua. Well worth a visit and will take around two hours to walk this thermal wonderland. Make sure you stop and see Huka Falls 5 minutes north of Taupo town.

It's a shame you have not planed a night in Taupo. When you see it, you will wish that you had.

Hi

Not sure which route you had planned to take to Rotorua. Most people take SH2 and then SH 27 via Matamata. The alternative would be to take SH1 and then SH1B via Cambridge. You will then go through a little town called Tirau where there some interesting shops including a number of antique shops and a couple of nice cafes. Tirau would be the only place that you might consider stopping but given that you don't appear to have too much time I would head straight for Rotorua and make the most of your time there.

I would aim to leave Auckland reasonably early so that you arrive in Rotorua by midday which will give you enough time to look around, leaving the whole of the next day for the drive to Napier and also some time to enjoy Taupo. I agree with Gaye - it is a pity that you can't spend more time in Taupo.

The drive over the Taupo Napier Highway (A highway in name only!) is very pleasant. Take a moment to stop at the Waipunga Falls Lookout. If you need a break the Tarawera Tavern has a cafe - it is in the middle of nowhere and is very Kiwi. I think there is also a cafe at the Te Haroto Summit.

Enjoy your visit to NZ

Thank you so much for the info thats great we did nearly book a night at Taupo but then would have had to miss Napier as we were running out of days, looks like we will have to plan another trip for all the places we have missed/not had enough time at.

Thanks again. Annette

Just a note to say that the best way to get from Rotorua to Napier is via Taupo. It is a great road and very scenic.

The map shows a road which looks more direct from Rotorua to Murapara and Lake Waikaremoana to Wairoa and on to Napier - this is very narrow, windy, parts are unsealed and the route is very isolated as it goes through the Urewera National Park - amazing but not the for faint hearted especially if you are on a tight schedule!
