Hawkes Bay/Rotorua

we have 2 full days from Napier to Auckland with an overnight in Rotorua . we would like to see thermal features, and maori culture, and possibly scenic hikes...any suggestions on the following: best maori culture/dinner, best thermal features to see in a day, and how much time should we allow in Hawkes bay on the way versus more time in and around Rotorua.

Hi Peg you can drive from Napier to Auckland in about 6 hours plus pit stop time so the hard part to your question is how long have you spent in Napier before you head for Auckland? just 1 day in Rotorua is not going to give you much time to have a good look around, if you could give us some idea of when you are coming and a rough budget it would help

cheers john

Thanks for the reply John. We land in Napier around 10am on 10/4 and depart from Aukland at 7pm on 10/6. We are staying in Rotorua Silver Oaks Geyserland the nights of 10/4-5. We would like to take in an evening Maori show and see two well rated (do you have a suggestion) we also want to see thermal features but not sure which one or two would be best (and not sure if that would affect which route we would take out of Napier. We would like to see some piece of Hawksbay before heading North. If we have any time left on 10/6 we will try to get a glimpse of Aukland but that is not a priority. We do like scenery and hikes as well.

Too much info??? Thanks again

Hi Peg, you havent really got much time at all to really see Napier you arrive at 10am and you will need to be on your way to Rotorua the same day so

here is my idea

arrive Napier 10am 10/4 head into Napier city,

do the Art deco walk around Napier

artdeconapier.com/collections/…walk-tours

after tour have lunch at Hogs breath Cafe

http://www.hogsbreath.co.nz/

after lunch drive up Bluff Hill for a scenic look of Napier

(instructions on how to do this are on my report)

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g255109-c172112/Napie…

this is going to take you till about 2pm after that you will need to be heading north to Taupo,

on the way stop at the Waipunga falls on the Napier /Taupo highway

www.flickr.com/photos/grum-uk/3258430054/

arrive Taupo approx 3.30pm stop in Taupo town for a quick leg stretch and a bite to eat or carry on to Wairaki BP Truck stop for the same, either way I would stop at Huka falls for a look and call in to the Taupo Honey house (on huka falls road) to pick up some Fresh Manuka honey

http://www.hukafalls.com/

http://www.hukahoneyhive.com/

by now its going to be aprox 5pm so you will need to drive on to Rotorua and check into your hotel and find somewhere for a meal in town

day 2 10/5 ok so after breakfast (you will need an early start)

I would head out to Rainbow springs and the Luge and spend some time at both places

http://rainbowsprings.co.nz/

http://www.skyline.co.nz/rotorua/ssr_luge/

and then find somewhere for lunch, in the afternoon I would head for hells gate thermal park and call in to the redwood forest for a nice afternoon walk through the forest (it is lovely in the late afternoon or early evening)

http://www.hellsgate.co.nz/

http://www.redwoods.co.nz/

the head to Whakarewarewa for an evening meal and cultural show

http://www.whakarewarewa.com/

after that you will be pretty tired so a hot swim at the polynesian pools before bed will help to ease those tired muscles

http://www.polynesianspa.co.nz/

next day after breakfast a quiet drive to auckland

well I hope this helps, remember this is just my idea, you probably have your own thoughts on what to see and others may have a better plan but at least you will be pointed in the right direction, I have tried to put in a do able mix of sights, nature, and culture to let you see a good cross section of Kiwi life and the websites so you can have a look at each place to see if they suit your taste

cheers john
