SkyCity Grand Hotel or Hotel DeBrett?

We will be in Auckland for a week in October and can't decide between these properties. We'll be visiting our daughter at the University of Auckland and are looking for a really comfortable place to stay and host our daughter. SkyCity looks a little over-the-top if the website homepage is any indication, but the actual accommodation (a suite) looks inviting. Hotel DeBrett, on the other hand, looks fun and a little more in keeping with our typical tastes. Any thoughts about which might be more comfortable and better located?

I'd opt for De Bretts. It's a small, and intimate hotel serving good food amid pleasant city surroundings - nice shops etc. Besides its closer to Uni, being a short but steep hike up-hill through Albert Park.

If you like something flashy and larger go for Skycity Grand.

Hotel DeBretts, I just love the feel of the place and they have a great onsite restaurant and bar. On the practical side it is very central and surrounded by some very nice shops and restaurants.

If you are there on a Sunday and like jazz, make sure you go and see the Caitlin Smith Trio.

Many thanks to both of you. I was feeling that the SkyCity Grand Hotel was a little too flashy for us. Thanks for weighing in!
