Itinerary - Held needed !! |
|
My family (5 adults and 2 kids) will be traveling to North Island in Dec. We will be there from Dec 8 to Dec 22. We would rent a car to drive around North Island.
I have completed my itinerary (with the read-up I have gathered from all forums in North Island and NZ's tourism sites). Below is my itinerary:
Day 1 > Piha Beach/ Picnic Day
Activities : Gondola and Luge Rides & Polynesian Spa
Day 3 > Rotorua, Activities : River Rats Rafting, Agrodome ,Hells Gate
Day 4 > Rotorua to Wai o Tapu thermal reserve to Taupo Honey Hive
Day 5 > Taupo Activities : Huka Falls (Spa Park Walk), Hukafalls Jet , Huka Prawn Park
Day 6 > Taupo to Napier, going for the Vince’s World of Wine
Day 7 > Gannet Safaris (Morning Tour) in Napier, then drive to Wellington from Napier
Day 8 > Wellington, any suggestion here ?
Day 9 > Wellington to Waitomo Caves, a visit to Waitomo Caves
Day 10 > Waitomo Caves to Auckland, rest and relax for that day
Day 11 > Auckland , to visit Parnell > Chocolate Boutique - Scroll in Auckland
Day 12 > Waiheke Island
Day 13 > Dolphins or Whales discoveries - Bay of Plenty
Day 14 > Aotea Square Market
Is there anything I have missed out which we shouldn’t leave without having it done? Is my itinerary too packed that there are places which we can’t possible covered unless we extend our day there? Any advice or suggestion will be helpful in making our journey in North Island a memorable one. Thanks.

This actually looks pretty good. Day 7 and Day 9 look pretty long, because the drives are long - you might want to check that out before going. You might want to spend less time in Auckland and more time in the countryside, because Auckland is far from beautiful, compared to other places on the island. It's a large city that rarely has good weather and feels more like a city in any other country around the world. Instead, I recommend making a stop on the Kapiti Coast or Wanganui northwest of Wellington for a night or two en route to the Waitomo Caves. Or spend another night or two on the beach in Piha or farther north, around Paihia - very pretty. Have a great time!

When you are in Wellington, check out Te Papa. A great family outing. Kapiti Coast is close to Wellington, you may wish to travel further. Wanganui would be better for a one night stop and rest before heading up to Waitomo.

Bling you need to shift Day13 back up and insert it as Day 3 and then move everything down a day. There is no point in driving 21/2 hrs there and back to do the Dolphin watch out of Tauranga when you're in Auckland. Tauranga is only 45 minutes from Rotorua and on the way if you take SH2. Stay in Mt Maunganui for the night 2 and then head over to Rotorua after the dolphin watch. I don't think you'll get all the way to Wellington after the gannets. It depends on the tide time as to what time you leave(if you're taking the beach tour) and it lasts for 4 hours or so. The drive to Wellington will take you at least 5-6 hours. Take SH2 through the Wairarapa to Wellington this way you're not travelling the same road twice when you head up to Waitomo (which is another very long day- what tour are you thinking of doing there? Again if you arrive late you may have to take a tour the next morning) I would use one of the Auckland days either in Wellington or on the trip back up to Waitomo, somewhere along the way, then you won't be so rushed.

Whilst in Auckland, make sure you catch a ferry across the harbour to Devonport. It is a great little place for breakfast or dinner (the lights of Auckland at night from the ferry are fantastic). For your day on Waiheke, you have the choice of taking your car over on the car ferry or catching the passenger ferry and utilising foot or taxi. Waiheke is beautiful and some great walks and vineyards. I am not sure how old the kids are so this may sway your ability to walk (along with the wine!!). I have posted info on Waiheke on this site so check it out.

Hi Zappers, I'll be joining Gannet Safari Tours. We intend to take the early departure time @ 9.30am. According to the agent, the trip will take about 3 hrs. Do you think we should stay in Napier for another day before we depart to Wellington ?
