Hi

Perth-Exmouth is 1250 km about a 14 hours drive, so it can be done in two days. Wannoo Billabong Roadhouse is halfway.

In Three days maybe stops in Geraldton and Carnavon

Hi, hope you like driving, it's a real long drive. Skywest fly reglularly up to Exmouth and although it's not dirt cheap to fly, you'll be spending a fair bit on fuel.

If driving though, Kalbarri might be a good stop on route as would Denham/Monkey Mia. The later especially good for fishing.

Lankyswan, perth to ningaloo can be done in two days but I would not recommend that if you are not used to driving long distances, ie 700 kms per day, The roads are good but the "boring-ness " of some stretches can become mesmerising and therefore dangerous. At least, being from England you drive on the same side of the road. There are good places to see on the way, especially if you won't be travelling that way again, so it would depend on your time table and budget ( I think you have the better deal with the exchange rate) whether you took more than 3 days to get there and saw places of interes on the way or whether you fly and save the time. When are you planning to come. It's pretty hot up there in summer, ( but I think your present heatwave will "acclimatise "you.) .lennyb

We're planning to do the same trip in Jan/Feb next year as part of a round-the-world trip. We've seen fly-drive & escorted packages, covering teh Pinnacles, Monkey Mia and Ningaloo, from 4 to 7 days, but would rather make our own way if poss. Any advice please on optimum duration, car hire companies and accommodation, assuming it's a round trip from Perth (& we'd also like to fit in Rottnest Island).

Any responses much appreciated

Happy Hobbit, make sure you " do your homework" regarding whether you self drive or go on an escorted tour. Basically, tho, Jan and Feb can be our hottest months and you are going north where it is hotter. Consider: it's a long way ;someone else does the driving ( so each of you gets to see everything and not just the passengers )in air conditioned vehicle( a hire-car would have A/C too). The driver will have a lot of knowledge re the places you are going that you will not know unless you read lots about the places first. Should there be a break down it will not be up to you to worry about it.Journeys like that can be more fun in company. If the Pinnacles, Monkey Mia and Ningaloo are the only places on the itinerary it will not be a round trip, but up and back the same way: they are all coastal areas. Check with the tour company. A 7 day trip would be best, 4 would make it very rushed, it can take 2 days to get to Ningaloo.

Re Rottnest; it is an island 20 kms off the perth coast,so you just catch the ferry; you can go for just the day.there are no cars so you walk around or hire bicycles.hope this helps and have a great visit. lennyb

Hi Happy Hobbit

1 week is not enough time to visit Ningaloo Reef and Monkey Mia from Perth. You don't want to miss the Pinnacles, Geraldton and Kalbarri NP either. Perth-Exmouth is about 1250 km one way and you have to add 300 km to Monkey Mia (return) and an extra 200 km to Kalbarri and other places making it a 3000 km one week drive.

If you want to visit Rottnest Island (and Perth and Fremantle!)) too I would say: 10-12 days at least.

Imho Ningaloo Reef is an absolute must visit (rather than Monkey Mia imo) and maybe consider a domestic flight unless you are visiting GBR too on your around the world trip.

Lankyswan, so much advice, so many decisions;you'll just have to come back. Anyway, if seeing the dolphins is a must you can go to Bunbury, 2 hours south of Perth, and realistically you can do that in a day . Also you can dive / snorkel with them at Rockingham, about an hour south of Perth , Rockingham Dolphin Tours, or some such name.lennyb

Lankyswan, A little "detour " on your posting. Is Bury short for Bury St Edmund or is it a place by itself? Love the B St E name. England has some beauties. I once crossed a bridge called Hellwith Bridge and that gave us lots of possibilities for why the bridge was so named. Anyway , back to Ningaloo. Hope you have a great time, know you will. lennyb
