Half a day in Williamstown and St Kilda

My sister and I have half a day to spare during our visit to Melbourne in November. We plan to visit Williamstown and St Kildda with the following tentative plan:

Take Melbourne City and Williamstown Ferry Cruise to Williamstown from Southgate down the river to Williamstown.

Get the take away Fish and Chips from Top of the Bay then explore the Botanic Gardens

Ferry from Gem Pier to St Kilda and visit St Kilda Esplanade Sunday Market

Wander around Fitzroy St & Ackland St.

Dinner at Stokehouse Café

Look for penguins at the Pier.

Take the tram ride back to Melbourne CBD after seeing enough of penguins.

How many hours do we need to cover all the above?

Will we be in time to see the St Kilda Sunday Market after seeing Williamstown?

Is it safe for 2 women to wander around the pier searching for penguins after sunset?

I would not be doing this in a half day with all the things you've listed. You are better off spending the whole time in one place, not both. It will be too rushed.

It's a great plan and a great day out. We do it with visitors all the time.

If you only have half a day you can get the train back to the city from Willy. Or forget the ferry and go to St Kilda. To do both takes all day. The ferry to St Kilda doesn't run that often and the Williamstown ferry takes over an hour to get there.

Thanks. How about the issue of safety for 2 women wandering around the pier searching for penguins after sunset? Will the place be very deserted and secluded in the evening?

St Kilda? Deserted? Hardly!

You'll be fine if you are there around sunset to see the penguins with all the other tourists, but don't hang around until the wee small hours of the morning.

If you want to do both Willy and St Kilda it is quicker to travel by train and tram from Southern Cross station. Half a day is rushing it. The penguins will be in more danger than any tourists ever will.

It's going to be rushed and it's an awfully long way to go for fish and chips but if you are aware that you won't have a lot of time and get to see much and still want to go, then at least you are going informed an can plan accordingly.

Dont go to the Botanic Garden in Williamstown to eat your fish and chips as it is quite a walk to do in one hour. Instead there is a park in Nelson Place right next to the Gem peir. You will enjoy the buildings in Nelson Place if time permits.

I cannot see how you will have time to have lunch at 12pm and get to the ferry by 1pm. Then eat fish and chips in Williamstown at 2pm. It will take atleast 10 mins to walk to the chip shop and then it can take upto 20 mins for your chips to be cooked if it is busy.

I personally wouldn't go to Williamstown. Spend the afternoon in St Kilda. The market is great, you could easily spend a few hours walking along the esplanade and exploring the shops in Acland St. Then have dinner at the Stokehouse (upstairs is more expensive, fine dining!)

As a Melbournian, Williamstown is nice but I would never put it on a "must-do" list for visiting travelers!!
