Southbank stay

Coming to Melbourne for the first time. I was wondering whether it is convenient to stay on the southbank as opposed to the other side?

Also what times do the shops close on weeknight and weekends?

Southbank is quite convenient to the CBD side: there are several bridges so access is easy. However, equally important, there's lots of activity on Southbank - numerous restaurants, some retail (mostly fairly upmarket) as well as the casino complex.

Retail hours vary (there are very few restrictions on retail trading hours in Victoria), but as an example I see from their website that Myer in the CBD is open until 7 pm every day (including weekends) except Thursday and Friday, when it's until 9 pm. However, if you're interested in the designer stores etc in the casino complex, my impression is that they tend to be open late most nights

Thank you

Is there much to do in the casino if you don't gamble?

Lots of retail and food as well as bars. There's also Galactic Circus which is like a huge video games arcade and a cinema complex.

Southbank is an excellent location for getting around Melbourne with plenty of cafes & restaurants. Go shopping if you don't want to gamble.
