Philip Island to GOR

I am planning to go to GOR after visiting Philip Island. Besides back tracking back to melbourne, is there another route to go to GOR directly from Philip Island? What are the pros and cons of each of the routes?

There's also the Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry (see http://www.searoad.com.au/). There's been a lot of discussion in this forum about car rental companies having restrictions about taking hire cars on the ferry which is an issue that you may wish to consider if you're using a rented car.

The ferry offers a far more interesting route, but it probably won't save you much (if any) time, especially if you spend some time on the Mornington Peninsular. And altho there are tolls on the CityLink part of the route via Melbourne, these are a lot less than the fare on the ferry.

It's not that most rental companies won't allow you to take the car on the ferry. However, they often stipulate that any damage done while on the ferry would not be covered by insurance.

If it we me, I'd drive.

From PI you would have to get to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula first. That will take you a good two hours in the car.

Then you need to wait for the ferry, get on the ferry, do the crossing and then drive from Queenscliff to the start to the GOR.

All up, it would take you a good 3-4+ hours to get onto the GOR.

Driving from Philip Island via the freeway and the motorway will get you to Geelong in about 2.5 hours and cost a lot less in tolls than the price of the ferry.

Thank you for all your comments. Will stick to driving via Melbourne.
