My husband and I, in our 60s/70s, are planning a two-week trip to Australia in September, and the more we read the more we think we can't leave out Melbourne! In the short time we have, we would like to learn as much as we can about Australian history and culture (and of course see some natural beauty as well).
I never even heard of Ned Kelly before I started this research, but now I'm thinking we have to go to the Old Melbourne Gaol. And I like the idea of driving the hour's drive to Ballaratt to go to Eureka Center and Sovereign Hill and the Eureka Stockade.
With all of that in mind, what else do you think we shouldn't miss?
Two people on their lists of top 10 favorites suggested going to an AFT game with a big crowd. What would be the chances for two American tourists to get tickets for a game in September? (Presumably it wouldn't be THE game. I never knew about Australian football until I started doing this research, either. I love what I'm learning!)
We would probably drive to and from Sydney, taking the coastal route one way and the faster inland route the other. Any advice on where we should stop along the way?
Thanks so much for any thoughts anyone has. I love these forums!
