What to do???

I am planning to take my 20yo daughter to Melbourne for a long weekend next month. My son (22yo) will also be meeting up with us in the city (presently in the army at Albury-Wodonga.) We will be staying in the city in Elizabeth Street. Apart from the compulsory Vic markets, can anyone make some suggestions as to places of interest for both young adults and 1 slightly older mum?

When are you coming and what do you like to do....?? Next month is right in the middle of the Spring racing carnival and there are events on everywhere, especially on weekends. Huge crowds at the racecourses and lots of fashion, men and women. Do you want to get out to live music venues, or a show, or a jazz venue....?? Other options are the Southgate to Williamstown ferry, or take a car and drive around the bay with the Sorrento to Queenscliff ferry. Will

hello shecan,

for shopping take your daughter to the obligatory Chapel St in Sth Yarra and Greville St in Prahran and in the city check out the QV building on Lonsdale St, the GPO in Bourke St Mall, walk down Little Collins St from Russell St to Elizabeth St and Flinders Lane between Russell and Elizabeth Sts and explore the great one-off boutiques in the arcades branching off. The Crown Casino area has some great spots to dine outside or enjoy a coffee (Waterfront or the wonderful Brasserie), state-of-the-art-in-sound cinemas or the casino itself for a flutter.

Yeah, we took our brood of 4 young adults (16-21) to Melbourne for a few days in early July. They were more than happy shopping pretty much the whole time, and couldn't get enough of Victoria Markets. They reckon the ones in Sydney aren't in the same league for good stuff at good prices. I got one day trip in to Marysville and surrounds....and we had a great night of belly dancing and all you could eat food at Lara's Turkish Restaurant, Sydney Road Carlton.

I reckon it will also depend on what you are each interested in there's a lot to choose from. I've never been to Melbourne without there being a good exhibition on at the National Gallery of Victoria (hey what's the "National" about?). Or you could go to a show (theatre that is). Plenty of good places to eat, and stacks of natural attractions.
