short trip to ADL starting tommorrow - ideas?

Hi all,

We are a young-ish couple heading to ADL from melb for a short NYE break from the typical melb NYE scene. We are interested in seeing the sights around town and also wineries.. wine or red is fine - looking for the bigger style wineries. Also, being a avid photographer.. interested in nice scenery. I spent a fair bit of time few years ago in ADL as I was working there but first time for wifey.

We will have a hire car.

Current plan is...

29/12 - Arrive midday ADL... check in to hotel in city.. look around town - maybe casino/gleneg in night?

30/12 - Daytrip - Barossa Valley and Clare Valley

31/12 - Daytrip to handorf - back for NYE ADL.. ideas for location / dinner?

01/13 - Drive in morning to kangaroo island - whole day in KI

02/13 - More KI stuff.. catch late afternoon ferry - drive back to ADL.. flight back to MEL 06:40 PM

So all ideas appreciated. Accom is all booked - 3 nights ADL.. 1 night KI

Look around Glenelg for a dinner venue - especially on the marina. Dont take your car-catch the tram. Most things will be fully booked by now though.

Failing that try Gouger Street

I thnk you are really pushing it to try and see Barossa and Clare in one day. Plus it is going to be verrrrry hot next week.

I would go to McLaren Vale instead- cooler and prettier IMO and some wonderful places for lunch -eg Currant Shed, D'Arrys Verandah or Star of Greece at Pt Willunga, or Fino at Willunga.

Hey that sounds great!

You can try Glenelg for NYE there is a huge party there or you can head into the city on the torrens for nye.

I would disagree about Mclaren Vale - Barossa has much better wines and more to choose from...

If you like fancier dinners you could try the river cafe in the city http://www.rivercafe.com.au/ - you have the best view of the fireworks

p.s. it is always hot in australia! ha

I second Samantha about Barossa - definitely better than McClaren. And it isn't always hot in Australia (grew up in Adelaide, which is a lot warmer than Melbourne, but it was snowing in the mountains in Victoria only a couple of weeks ago).

nozzies comment is based on the 39 forecast for Thursday... ick adn IME it can be forecast to be 39 and be 43.....

I like the less hectic aspect of maclaren vale over the Barossa,

but if i was choosing the Hills would be my area of choice. (more boutique places with good drops) You could combine this with Hahndorf

We've done the fireworks in the Bistro under the adelaide theatre near elder park, great view and good food, they had a dinner and wine special about $65 for 3 course

Yep and hey I am actually HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND posters #3 and 4 you might note the OP is from Melbourne - they dont need to be given general information about weather in AUSTRALIA.

\My point is both Clare and the Barossa can be miserable on a very hot day.

I was making a point about generalisations on Australian weather. I know how hot South Australia gets in summer(I lived there for 22 years).

Though I agree there are some lovely wineries in the Adelaide Hills. The Lane is a particular fave of ours for lunch , and Smith and Shaw , Nepenthe, Chain of Ponds, Petaluma etc are great their focus is mostly on whites. Not a lot for red wine drinkers there.

I think escobar has meant to type White or red..

> wine or red is fine << hence the suggestion of The Hills

agree about the reds in the hills altho 'bird in hand' did have a few good ones esp their tempranillo.

i like mclaren vale better than the barossa too. the latter is always a bit picture post card like for me . but then again i like the coastal setting.

wine wise hard to tell the difference imo. but that's probably why i wash glasses at our wine show and dont judge.
