Accomm advice please

Hiya

Just wondering if anyone out there can help with some advice regarding where to stay. We are travelling to Townsville in Jan 2007 and we are currently looking at staying at either the Waters Edge or Ocean Breeze.

Here's the problem...I can't find any reviews on Waters Edge, but I can get a rate of $110 - $130 per night, depending on the room type which isn't too bad for fully self contained. I've been on the website and the rooms look quite nice and I believe it has just been refurbished.

Ocean Breeze also looks nice and I have seen a couple of good reviews for this Hotel, BUT can't get a room rate???

SOoooo, does anyone have any idea what the Ocean Breeze charge for a self contained room for 2?

....and does anyone have a review of the Waters Edge?

Any help much appreciated.

i am travelling to Townsville next week......i have booked a room at the casino which seems the best in town...i looked at wotif rates and then I rang the hotel...I actually got a better rate and saved $90.00AUD...(it can be the reversed in some situations)

so suggestion, do the same thing as above...to get best rate.

where you stay depends on what you want to be in easy walking distance to.

Waters edge is on the strand near... the water (obviously). there are some pubs/clubs and restaurants (the waters edge restaurant is supposed to bew very good) in the area, but it is a bit of a walk (and not a very safe on at that) to the middle of town.

the casino is even further out (not that in a town like townsville anywhere is a very great distance) - it is at one end of the stand (waters edge is about half way along). the casino is ok, but dated.

the other area to stay in is palmer street which is just across the river from flinders street mall and the center of town (which is also the center of the night life). Palmer street has the trendy restaurants, boutique bars, a couple of rough as guts pubs, great fish and chips. the quest apartments and quality hotel are both on palmer street.

when I travel to townsville i usually stay at the quest... the aprtments are clean and comfortable, but it won't break the bank.

if you don't need to stay in the center of town, you should consider staying on magnetic island, which is just a short ferry ride off the coast (less than an hour - ferrys run every hour till late)

Hi Ellemay,

The casino is still probably the pick of the bunch in terms of hotel quality. There isn't a lot to choose from in townsville and even most of the resorts on magnetic island are 3-3 1/2 stars at best.

there are some decent serviced apartments available (I think they have just finished a new lot right next to the bridge on palmer street).

The photos on wotif, expedia etc can be deceptive (they make the holiday inn in townsville look ok, and it really is a dive!)

have a look at whereis to get a feel for where the casino is in relation to the rest of townsville - it is at the river end of the strand. I have not stayed there myself, but I have worked out of one of the suits when we were there on business earlier this year. it is certainly not shereton or stamford quality, but it is pretty good for a regional centre. it is certainly beeter than the hotel linked to the casino in cairns. They have been doing work on it over the past year, so if that is completed it may be much better.

I usually stay at the quality or quest simply for the fact that most of the decent restaurants and bars are right next door, which makes finding dinner after a day at work much easier.

I have heard good things about watermark, but once again, I have not stayed there personally.

If you are travelling for business and are going to be based in the town centre then I would look to stay on palmer street for convenience. if you are going to have leisure time then go out to the strand.

Waters Edge (or Reef International) is OK - good spot on the Strand. I stayed there about 4 years ago and I don't remember any problems.

Don't know much about Ocean Breeze except it's close to Waters Edge next to The Strand so it's relatively central.

The casino has a great view (ocean side) and a really good pool area. But it also houses Townsville's worst restaurant (Aqua) and is a long walk to anywhere you might want to go in TSV. The room sizes are on the small side.

As already mentioned, The Quest Apartments on Palmer Street are very central to the city and nightlife and even the old Holiday Inn (the "sugar shaker") is a reasonable alternative.

Have a look at my restaurant guide to TSV as it may help you out www.bbbalc.com/index.cfm…

Thanks all so much for the advice. I finally managed to get a reply from Ocean Breeze regarding rates, it is still a toss up between the Waters Edge and the Ocean Breeze, I guess I'll just have to make the choice and live with it. I think the Strand is the place we won't to be, we're not too concerned about restaurants and nightlife and would prefer to be close to the water and parks.

Thanks for the hint with wotif Ellemay. I normally do all my bookings through them, but found going direct to the hotel cheaper this time.

Thanks again
