My husband and I (ages 62 and 58) will be in Port Douglas in January, and we want to spend a day on the Great Barrier Reef. We have snorkeled numerous times (when we were much, much younger!), but we are far from what you would call experienced snorkelers, and it's been years since we last tried. I've read about many snorkel excursion tours on Tripadvisor, but I just can't decide which is best for us. I like Quicksilver for the semi-submersible and other features that they offer that seem like they cater to the non-experienced snorkeler. However, I'm not thrilled with the huge numbers of passengers that they take. I do, however, like that they go to the Outer Reef as I have read that you can see much better out there than places like the Lower Isles. Also, I am looking for a cruise that I do not need to book far in advance. We will be there in the wet season (early to mid- January), and I've been wisely advised here on Tripadvisor that I should wait to book our GBR day until we know which day we will have the best weather. On a cruise like Quicksilver, it seems that there will always be space available to add two more passengers. With a smaller boat, I'm worried that if we are not going to book in advance, then the cruise will be full when we try to book it. Keeping all of this in mind, please advise me on which you think would be the best GBR snorkel cruise for us.
