Australia October 2015

This is a very early I know but spouse and I want to visit Australia for the first time in October 15 to celebrate our 25th anniversary. School and University fees mean that we are very budget driven, with Spouse hoping to do travel and accommodation for £3k, although I know that we need to add at least another grand to that. We would like to see Sydney and the Barrier Reef, and can only spend three weeks in Australia, so do not want to spend too much time staring at the seat back in front of us on the plane, or staring out at darkness on a bus/train.

Any suggestions very gratefully received

Does that $4000 pound also include your airfares? So roughly $1300 a week.

Even without airfares, that might be pushing things.

What sort of accommodation are you after? Backpackers? Hostels? Shared facilities (e.g cabins in caravan park)?

We need more information to help you out.

Thanks :)

Are Sydney and the Reef the only places you want to visit? If so you would only have to spend a grand total of about 3 hours each way looking at the back of a plane seat! Also you will find that closer to the time you would be able to pick up a good deal on your airfare - we're flying from Cairns to Sydney later this month for $159 each and you will sometimes find cheaper than that. We love trains but it's a VERY big country and with limited time flying is definitely the way to go.

If you give some idea of your specific interests people will be able to offer ideas, meanwhile do plenty of searching of the forums for your destinations.

We bought our Qantas tickets Sydney to Cairns well in advance but they were $700AUD roundtrip for the 2 of us. Cheaper tickets may be findable as the person above reports, but we booked early to be sure we could get seats to connect back to our international flight. So it is a dent in the budget but flying is the practical way to go. The GBR is well worth seeing!

Thanks- I was a bit vague !

Ok so very keen on Opera and Modern Art, so want to see something at the Opera House and museums.

Also want to see the Blue mountains.

Wondering whether it is best to divide the trip to 10 days ish each Sydney and Cairns

perhaps with a car in Cairns to allow for exploration further afield

October will be a great time of year to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Generally some of the best diving in snorkelling conditions are seen during October and November! Depending on your goals whether it be scuba diving, learning to scuba dive, or snorkelling will determine the best length of time to devote to the region. If you are avid scuba divers or planning on becoming certified before arriving in Cairns a live-a-booard dive trip is always the BEST option and they can be found in a variety of price ranges and lengths of time. If you just want snorkel 1 or 2 day trips to the reef will scotch that itch. If you can share a bit more about what you'd like to get out of the region, I can make more specific recommendations about must do adventure that are to be had in Cairns. 10 days is plenty of time to explore much of the city and the region. Renting a car will give the freedom to accomplish this but getting around use local transport will enable you time to relax and observe our stunning tropical landscape.

Hi,

Your budget, as others have stated, is low if it includes air fares.

I would suggest that with three weeks and your stated interests your trip must include Sydney, Cairns and Canberra and should include Uluru/Kata-Juta.

There are excellent hostels in Oz that cater to all demographics, these have double rooms with facilities and a communal kitchen for self catering and are one means of stratching the budget.

Cheers,
