1. Re: new year celebration

everywhere will have some form of activities for new years.

Brisbane has activities starting mid afternoon based around southbank, the river and the botanic gardens.

At southbank there will be:

a big screen in the cultural forecourt showing free movies under the stars (go early, take a picnic and settle in for the evening watching movies and the firworks),

the suncorp piazza (partly enclosed amphitheater) will have live music and DJ's - they are going for an 80's theme this year

a street carnival on little stanley street (latin dancing, music, roving buskers etc) with two stages and outdoor dance areas, one with live big band type music and the other with a DJ

and there will be fireworks at 9pm and midnight

there are also two pubs and multiple restaurants in southbank that will have newyears celebrations on

At the river side centre there are some of brisbane's best restaurants, all of which will be open for buisness, and it is then a short stroll along the river board walk to watch the fireworks.

there is also a huge ball held at city hall on new years eve, and the casino has all kinds of fun events that night.

there are firworks on the beach at surfers paradise (Gold coast) and mooloolaba (sunshine coast)... and no doubt many other places - they are the ones I have been to. Mooloolaba is a very family orientated celebration, but surfers is more the young party crowd

2. Re: new year celebration

This is really simple, but a couple of years ago we had a great new years with two other couples at a quiet stretch of beach in Caloundra called Shelley's. We took down a BBQ, some wine, nibbles, candles and a couple of fold out tables to the beach, set out stuff up in the dunes. Watched the sun set, had dinner, had some drinks, watched the fireworks and generally enjoyed the company. Was a really relaxed way to welcome in the new year without the crowds.
