Brisbane - Places to stay (a selection)

I am posting this series because there has been a lot of comment on how little there is to do in Brisbane.

Brisbane is a relatively compact city compared with Sydney and Melbourne. Most of Brisbane’s main attractions are located within a 2km radius of the CBD and the others that can be said to be ‘in Brisbane’ are located within a 15km radius.

Where you stay in Brisbane largely depends on what you want to do, and how much you want to spend. Generally, though, the CBD has accommodation which caters to all tastes and budgets. From five star hotels like Stamford Plaza and Conrad’s to huge backpacker complexes like The Palace and banana benders. (stars given beside name of hotel). This one will have to be a work in progress…..

Rydges Southbank 3-4*

(www.rydges.com/) this is a great hotel located right on the southbank parklands. Close to shopping, restaurants, Kodak beach, westend, the CBD and all modes of public transport.

The Marriott 5*

(http://marriott.com.au) located between the valley and the CBD (about 3-5mins walk from the mall), it has easy access to public transport, but not as close as rydges or stamford.

Stamford Plaza 5*

(www.stamford.com.au)is probably the nicest of the big hotels. it is located beside the city botanic gardens (about 3mins walk from the mall) and looks out over the river. it is right next to the free city loop bus service (which can take you to the train station) and just near the ferry stops at riverside.

The Carlton Crest 4-5*

(www.carltonhotels.com.au/brisbane/ ) located less than 100m from the queen street mall, and close to roma street parklands. Looks out over king george square and city hall. Picasso’s restaurant downstairs is great!!!!

that's a great collection. The only drawback would be that people new to Brisbane may find it confusing.

I would recommend Benson Court motel. I think they have studio uits. You can cook a bit, not much, inside your unit if you don't put too much chili in your wok. Its location is ultra-convenient, ~5min drive to CBD, close to Mt Cootha Botanic garden and university Queensland, right beside a huge shopping center and a transport hub-trains, buses and river-cats. I remember it was reasonably priced.

Whenever I am going anywhere, the first thing I do is read a guide book and get an idea of what I want to do, and what the best area for me to stay in is. So I think this listing is fabulous, since I would already know the area I want before looking for a hotel, even if I've never been to a city.

I appreciate the effort georgia!
