We are driving from Sydney to Darwin in May this year. We have a booking in Camooweal as we were a little concerned about the lack of accommodation there. We have also booked Darwin for mid May onwards. Between the these two places we have no booking as we are undecided where we want to stay. We were a little put off by Tennant Creek after doing our research, so we do not want to commit - we would rather wing it and stay where it looks nice and safe. Ideally we would like to stay in cabins or motel units with self catering facilites, and we like to take it easy with not too many kilometres per day. Staying in the one place for a few nights is also fine with us.
My questions are - can we wing it without bookings at that time of the year? And, are there any specific recommendations of places to stay?
