Hi, I am going to Sydney on 10 Oct and arrive at 6pm in the evening. Is it better to take train to my hotel which is at Travelodge Philips street or should I just take a cab for more convenience. how much is the cab fare and how long is the journey?

Is it diffcult to take train or monorail in Sydney? I am also looking for accommodation at Bondi Beach or coogee beach. Prefer hotel or apartment with sea view but most are expensive and not many selection. are there any hotel that is not on the web but known to locals? My budget is around Aud180 per night. Thanks for all your advise.

You are arriving in Sydney on a Friday evening at 6:30pm, and you will likely experience the Friday evening taxi shortage. Every other time of day the taxis queue for passengers at the aiport, but somehow, at 6pm on Ftiday it is the other way around.

Anyway, if you want to get a taxi, they queue is right out the front of the terminal, It will cost you around $40 for around a 20 minute trip.

You can get the train. The train station is right next to the International terminal. The cost is around $14 per person. The closest station to yout hotel is St James. The train goes directly there, and the hotel is around 200m from the station exit at Queens Square. There are two sets of stairs to exit the station, and you will have to be comfortable carrying your bags.

catch the train (20mins)

the taxi queue will be 40mins+ and the traffic will be herrendous(sp?)

trains are easy to take, except each train stops at a different selection of stations (ie not like a subway where trains stop at every station along the line) - so make sure you look at the TVs at the station/go on cityrail.info for timetables

also, if travelling a long way out from the city, train frequencies are pretty bad

the monorail is not a serious form of transport... it is a small tourist circle railway that costs $4.50 for 1 loop

with bondi and coogee, there arent many hotels at all... both areas have not undergone significant development so are dominated by small old buildings and backpacker hostels - there are only 2 hotels of note - crown plaza at coogee and swiss grand and bondi. an appartment would be best as there are some beautiful appartment buildings overlooking both beaches

Thanks for all your help. I think I will go by train. St james is 200m to my hotel...is it a difficult walk? that means alot of building or traffic blocking etc. How about martian place station is it better or nearer? Thanks again

it is a very easy walk... and as its right on the edge of the CBD, there wont be too many people

to go to martin place, you would have to change at central onto a packed train - a 50m shorter walk would mean 10mins+ extra travel time ... stick with st james

no, you will have to catch the train from either St James or Martin Place (doesnt make a difference except St James has slightly more trains going through) to central, then walk over to the country terminal for blue mountains trains

coogee has no train line, youll have to catch a bus from the city: sydneybuses.info/uploads/File/pdfs/regular_r…

apologies...I actually mean I will listen to your advise and take train from airport to my hotel. My mind must be thinking about the next question on Blue mountain so thats why I type BM.

Than I think it will be easier if I find a hotel at Bondi instead Coogee. My itineary as below:

Day 1-arrive sydney 5plus pm. (maybe go sydney tower for night scene, find a place to have nice dinner but not too far from hotel)

Day 2&3-tour around sydney major attraction

Day 4 - Take train to BM

Day 5 - enjoy my free day in BM

Day 6 - take train from BM to Bondi

Day 7 - spend my beach time in Bondi

Day 8 - Depart home.

Pls give any comments. Thanks.
