Looking for a beautiful place to stay outside Copenhagen

We're planning an August trip to Denmark and having some trouble with our itinerary. My father-in-law is not big on cities--he loved staying in quiet, historic manor houses in Ireland--and we may limit our time staying in downtown Copenhagen to just a couple of nights. However, we are very interested in a number of sights around Copenhagen in North Zealand, including Kronborg Castle, the Viking Museum in Roskilde and others.

Most itineraries have you staying in Copenhagen and taking trains to these and other sites. Does anyone have recommendations for a quiet, beautiful stay in a manor house or something similar in Zealand where we can take our rental car see the major sights around Copenhagen without staying in the city?

Castle hotels are mainly found in the provinces in Denmark, and on top of my head I can´t think of many -

there´s

"Skjoldenæsholm", south of Roskilde (in a pretty area, lots of countryside roads and some local sights also) http://www.skj.dk/Default.asp?ID=232

and

Havreholm Slot, near Hornbæk and the North Zealand coast, which has gotten somewhat mixed reviews.

Sonnerupgård http://www.sonnerupgaard.dk/english.aspx is also near Roskilde.

100 away from Copenhagen, there´s Dragsholm Castle, west of Holbæk http://www.dragsholm-slot.dk/en and on the lovely Møn Island, 100 km to the south, Liselund Ny Slot http://www.liselundslot.dk/?lang=uk

Perhaps a really nice old countryside inn or B&B could also be an option?

I´ll have to think a bit, perhaps others here have suggestions ;-).

Thanks for those suggestions, and I'll take a look at your helpful links. And we'd certainly be open to a nice countryside inn or B&B as well, if you or others have some ideas. Thanks again for your help.

I stayed at Skjoldenæsholm for a conference a few months ago, the rooms are small and a bit dated, but it's got some amazing common areas and a nice restaurant. The surrounding areas are beautiful as well.

There's also Sophienberg Slot: http://www.sophienberg.dk/front-page-en north of Copenhagen.

You can also have a look here: http://www.slotshotel.dk/index.php - Danske Slotshoteller is a chain of 6 "castle hotels", especially Sauntehus Castle Hotel might be interesting for you, as it's only 10km from Kronborg.

Those sound promising, too. We'll check those, and look for some nice inn and b&B options as well. Thanks.

I have stayed at Skjoldenæsholm multiple times and it is very cozy and relaxing. There is a golf course right across the road with two 18 hole courses and a small chipping course. I would recommend it.

I appreciate all the suggestions, but nothing here quite fits what we're looking for. In Ireland we stayed in several manor houses and very nice B&Bs that offered four to eight rooms in quiet, wooded or coastal settings, but so far I keep running into much larger manor houses/castles in Denmark that seem aimed at conferences and/or wedding parties, or small B&Bs with only a room or two and shared bathrooms in the hallways. I still hope to find something thirty minutes to an hour or more outside of Copenhagen that we can use as a base to explore the major sights of Zealand, and duck into the city a couple times, too. Any more ideas?
