Big Sur drive from north to south - June 2013

We are planning to finish a 4 week holiday in the USA by driving along Route 1 from San Francisco to LA (fly out of LA). We love hiking and exploring and see that there are many spots we can stop off at. We also love the beach and seaside towns. How long should we allow for this trip and any suggestions of must see spots? Any tips of car hire and accommodation? thanks

Welcome to TA please take some time to read the Top Question including the Big Sur photo blog which gives you a lot of info. The Big Sur is the part between Carmel and Cambria so most spend a day or two in Carmel or Monterey and then drive the Big Sur and then overnight in Cambria or perhaps Pismo Beach and then drive further south to LA If you have more time then an overnight in Santa Barbara would be nice

Car hire ? I guess you want to rent one in SF. Please look at carhire3000.com for deals with insurance and please book Hertz, Avis, Budget, Alamo or Enterprise.

Monterey, Cambria and Santa Barbara forum have details on where to stay and what to do
