Has anyone ever done the Iguana Tour. My dream vacation always includes an encounter with dolphins! What are the chances of being up close and personal with one?
If you are looking for dolphins, go to cayo largo, they have a dolphinarium right at the beach of playa paridiso, you can eat lunch and watch them all day, or pay a few $ and walk in to the water to play with them, far better then the gated pens of varadero, cayo coco and holguin - some were actually cages in the middle of the ocean!
Since we have already booked, will consider Cayo largo next time. We are going to Brisas on the 22nd so we won't run into you there. Have fun!
Cayo largo in June- September, walk the beach at night and you will likely run in to a giant sea turtle laying her eggs! But don't touch or make noise, just sit in the dark, listen to the ocean and enjoy! You can also go in to town and ask the turtle farm guy to take you out at night to see them, he is a marine biologist and tags them while you are there- it's amazing
I've done the Iguana tour many times, it's one of my favorites because it's usually a bit quieter than the Playa Bonita tour.
Last March/April, the dolphins actually followed our catamaran for a bit...It such an exciting thing to see then free in the ocean, instead of penned up....
The dolphins don't always "show up", but when they do, it's worth every penny you paid for the trip.
Lunch on Iguana Island is always excellent paella, and if you don't like seafood, they cook you chicken.
Here is a description of the jeep tour:
Visit to "San Miguel" village
Stop at "Senado" town, to visit the ruins of a sugar mill and the first steam locomotives in the area
Visit to the Haitian settlement "Caldige"
Visit to a Cuban native descendant
Exploring the "Rebelde" cave
Typical Cuban lunch at Natural Park Cangilones
Free time at Natural Park Cangilones (horseback riding, swimming in a river)
Drive to a water reservoir to visit a young fish hatchery farm.
price is $76.00PP
We did the Iguana Island tour once in Jan 2008. We didn't see any dolphins but the tour that went out on the following Monday saw a family of 3. It's a nice tour with a couple of other brief stops. It's an all day excursion.
You can also swim with dolphins in Holguin/Gaurdalavaca and Santiago de Cuba.
