Monte Gordo or Alvor or Cabanas or Somewhere Else???

Hi, we're planning to to the Algarve for a 3-week holiday from early July. We have 2 kids aged 5 and 2, and would like to stay somewhere with a sandy beach, and has good access to restaurants and shops. A nice harbour walk would be nice. We don't want to stay in the more built-up resorts and would like somewhere fairly quiet and low-key. From what I've read on the forums, it seems that on the western/central Algarve, Alvor or Carvoeiro sound good, and in the easter side, Tavira, Cabanas or Monte Gordo... but not having been to the Algarve, we are unsure!!! Last year, we went to Sao Martinho do Porto in the Silver Coast and absolutely loved it! This year, we want to see the Algarve but want something similar. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

My ten pence worth:

Monte Gordo - great big flat sandy beach, no harbour (that's a Vila Real de Santo Antonio a couple of miles away) fairly quiet place not so big as other resorts but a bit high-rise. Small place, everything within fairly easy reach but not much in the way of shops - again the big supermarkets are in Vila Real.

Cabanas - small town, big resorts outside. Nothing much in the way of shops. Beaches are actually on an island across a couple hundred yards of water and accessible only by ferry or water taxi. One small supermarket, everything else in Tavira about 4 miles by road.

Tavira town is a mile from the sea. A trip to the beach, which is also on an island, is a trek down either to the town where ferries and water taxis take you there or an even further r trek down a dusty road to the other ferry. Tavira is a nice town in itself with a giant new shopping centre and plenty of places to go.

Alvor - the original village with harbour is now encircled by large modern resort developments. Massive, sandy, beach, very busy in summer. Plenty of places to go in the old village but possibly quite a lot of walking involved. The old village is situated on a hill but the surrounding area is flat.

Carvoeiro - an old village in a deep valley, small but perfectly formed beach. Most of the modern resort areas are up on the hills outside town which are quite steep to climb after a night out.

Good luck in choosing.

We're big fans of Cabanas de Tavira. Okay, there isn't much to see in terms of shopping but the fantastic kilometers long white sandy beach makes up for it! Cabanas is a very quiet village, no highrise buildings, with enough restaurants, a few small supermarkets for the daily errands, and a nice brandnew boardwalk for an evening stroll. A big shopping mall is only a 5 min. drive away ; the town of Tavira a 10 min. drive. Tavira has a few shops, many restaurants and the best icecream parlour (Pastelaria Romana).

Seven more weeks ...

Agree with everything Destination Expert says. Having been to all the places mentioned, I would choose Monte Gordo for a family holiday. There are several hotels overlooking the beach, which is huge and perfect for young children, especially as it also has bars and restaurants on the sand - so no trekking up to the promenade for ice creams or cold drinks!

What it doesn't have is the charm of many other villages along the coast, but neither do most of the coastal resorts in the UK!
