According to this website: www.kirkenesinfo.no/hXGXzngRjSWU.9.idium the bus connection from Kirkenes to Inari and Ivalo only runs in summer, June 25th to August 11th. The links to Goldline Bus Company on the site don't seem to work.

This company, however, http://www.pasvikturist.no/wips/84905322/ offers roundtrips to Inari with minibus, daily departures summer and winter. They should be able to give you a one-way lift to Inari, I suggest you contact them on firmapost@pasvikturist.no

The Finish bus company Eskelisen operates buses from eastern Finnmark county (Kirkenes and Vadsø) only in the summer. But the bus from Honningsvåg through Lakselv and Karasjok to Ivalo and ROvaniemi operates during the winter as well.

There is no train and the flights go via southern Norway :(

You will probably have to take the Veolia bus to Karasjok from Kirkenes first:

.. and change to Eskelisen there:

Both companies operate modern, comfortable buses. They have stops at some road station about every hour, long enough to have a coffee and go to the toilet.

You could fly from Kirkenes to Lakselv, but this involves going first to Tromsø and change plane there.. I would rather take the Veolia bus.

Very interesting, Brainspin, but if we study the timetable we find that the bus from Karasjok to Ivalo and on to Helsinki only runs once a week in the period 18.02-24.04.2011, and the weekly departure is on Saturday morning. Looking at the map, we also see that travelling via Karasjok is a big detour. My advice would be to try Pasvikturist.no first for transportation from Kirkenes to Inari.

Well, my Finish is a little rusty, so I guess it would be advisable tor write or ring Eskelisen. But I interpret the bus time table to mean that the Karasjok - Ivalo bus runs daily:

"M-S = Ajetaan joka päivä/every day"

http://tinyurl.com/2wqtuqt

Pasvikturist has no routes to Finland in February, it seems. You'd have to charter them. But again, ring them.

What we could agree, iverh, is that public transport across the Norwegian-Finish border is not very frequent or good in the winter.

Many thanks for your advice

Karasjok bus to Ivalo definitely runs on a daily basis in winter - I saw it heading south last time I was there........your other suggestion is helpful.

But it is amazing that the bus company do not reply to e-mails or publish their winter timetables.

I guess there aren't many independent travellers in Lapland at that time of year

Thanks

Eskelisen timetables are a bit confusing because on their list of timetables there are sometimes two different ones covering basically the same itinerary. But I found one that you could use, valid for winter 2011: www.eskelisen-lapinlinjat.com/en/index.php…

It is number 43 on their list of itinerarys, starts from Tana Bru, goes via Utsjoki to Inari, Ivalo and ends in Rovaniemi. 4 weekly departures.

8. Re: Bus travel from KIrkenes to Inari and Ivalo

Hello,

I have the same problem, only the other way around. I'm also travelling lapland in winter (on my own). I have to get to Kirkenes from, probally, Ivalo. I think it is going to be the detour by bus. I already booked the Hurtigruten so I really can not miss the boat. That's the tricky part. I was wondering if it is possible to get to the far north of finland by bus and then get a taxi to Kirkenes. I'm searching the internet and hardly can find any information about that. Any suggestions?

Does anybody know where I can find prices grom the veolia bus to Kirkenes and where does it leave?

Looking forward to reply's.

Best regards, Bianca.

You will have to change bus from Eskelisen to Veolia either in Karasjok or at Tana Bru. Veolia bus Karasjok-Kirkenes time table here: veolia-transport.no/timetables-bus/215-hamme… Please note, runs Mon, Wed, Fri and Sun. From Tana Bru to Kirkenes: veolia-transport.no/timetables-bus/520a-tana… Same departures as from Karasjok pluss morning departure Mon-Fri.

Eskelisen time tables seem complicated, but give it a try and good luck! http://www.eskelisen-lapinlinjat.com/en/

The Eskelisen bus from Ivalo to Tana bru runs Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

http://turl.no/ebj

It gets to Tana bru far too late for the passangers to make the Veolia connection to Kirkenes.

You must stay overnight at Tana bru and take the Veolia bus the next morning:

Here are a couple of places to stay at Tana bru:
