What do you think? GOR TRIP 4 nights 3 days

HI we are planning our trip to GOR in middle jan 2014. Would love some feedback, firstly I'm doing a course in melbourne so we will be there for 4 nights then picking up a hire car tues avo about 4.30pm and starting our trip.

This is the plan and we would like our budget to be under $200 per night if possible with breakfast.

Tuesday night stay Geelong, is it worth the stop here?

Wednesday head to torquay for the day check out bells beach etc continue on to Lorne

Stay wed night at Lorne spend the day around this area and continue through apollo bay and stay at port Campbell for Thursday night ( as we want to see twelve apostles for sunrise.

Friday - twelve apostles and continue to warrnambool and stay around this area maybe a visit to port fairy and then Saturday head back thorough the back way to fly out of tullarmarine at 6pm Saturday.

What do you think ? Is there others stopovers that are better then these mentioned? Is it not to rushed?

I suspect many people wouldn't consider a stop in Geelong because they have limited time and it's too close to Melbourne, but we had a whole week and stopped in Geelong and enjoyed it very much. The waterfront is nice, the botanic gardens are lovely, the wool museum is interesting, it's worth a drive out to the Bellarine Peninsula, so if you have the time it's definitely worth it. And for you, if you're only setting out in the late afternoon, it makes sense to make that your first overnight.

I'd suggest Queenscliffe as a better place to stop than Geelong. Nice little holiday beach town vs big regional city. A visit to Scotchmans Hill winery is worthwhile too.

On your last day it might be worth taking the detour to Timboon (called the "Food & wine trail" or similar). The restaurnat at the Timboon Distillery is worth a stop.

Thanks for your info! Great to hear your feedback. We might go stay at queenscliff instead of geelong now, I have heard lots about it. And prob stop in geelong on our way home.

Haven't been for a while, but Barwon Heads used to have the best fish and chips in Victoria.

It's beautiful and definitely worth a stop, a swim and a walk

As you approach Geelong on the northern outskirts take the city exit and continue on the highway to Rippleside take the Bell Parade exit and follow the esplanade, western beach and eastern beach roads around the bay on the edge of the city. Turn left into Hearne parade and follow this road around the eastern gardens it will link up with the Geelong Port Arlington road at Newcomb. The drive around Corio bay into the city is quite beautiful.

Once you leave Geelong its a pleasant drive around the bay through a number of villages to Queenscliff.

BTW the fish and chip shop at Queenscliff beside the one at Aireys inlet on the GOR is one of the best.

If you look at Geelong and the Bellarine peninsula on Google earth you will see the drive I have mentioned.
