Accommodation help

Hello, we will be in Alta early October next year, are there any cabins, cottages close to the area? Ideally we would like some place to stay where we could simply step out of our room and gaze up at the sky if conditions are favorable for Northern lights. We would prefer not to have to drive late night and find some place to park. Even a hotel that has a door that directly access the outside would work.

Thanks in advance.

A holiday rental would most likely be by the week and privately owned cabins are often in the nature away from it all. The area is als0 very sparsely populated so wilderness is easy to come by.

If you are looking for a cabin by the night, a camping is often the only possibility.

For the moment I cannot find a few cottages for rent in Finnmark county, but I suggest you check later as many can be inaccessible in winter,

Also try listings on official web sites,TA, HomeAway, airbnb, tourist office etc. Tourism is not really big in these areas, so do not expect to find a huge selection.

Thank you will look into the above, we went to Iceland last year and spent the majority of our trip outside the capital, things were sparse but we found some amazing gems with zero light pollution, but this looks like a whole other level of sparseness...

We wanted to drive Abisko->Skibotn->Alta-> then somewhere in Finland (Utsjoki->Inari) making out way back to Kiruna for a flight, not sure yet, still planning

From looking at the roads, not many options, can anyone suggest a better route that may have accommodations like we are seeking?

There is a whole other level of vastness, population density is partly about the half of Iceland and tourism non-existant in some parts. Abisko is one of the dullest places that I know of - it is literally in the middle of nowhere and has 68 ! inhabitants. Compared to the coast and the fjords, the interior of Finland and Sweden is rather dull. Vast spaces of forests and nothingness - but perhaps this is what you are looking for ? I do not know much about accomodation possibilities in this area, but I suspect most will be concentrated around certain ski resorts. There are quite a few holiday homes at Riksgränsen at the border between Narvik and Sweden - timeshares they say - mostly flats.

Tourism in north Norway is concentrated around Tromsø area and Lofoten area and to a certain extent also in the Vesterålen area and on the island of Senja. These are also some of the most scenic parts of north Norway and interesting accomodation should be possible to find. A couple of examples:
