Spending one day in the Redwood Forest, what should we do?

Hi! We are flying to Portland on Tuesday (later this month) driving to Newport and staying the night. On Wednesday we will go see the sea lions at the docks and eat lunch in Newport. On our way out of Newport we will stop and visit sea lion cave. Then drive 101 to Eureka and stay the night. So we will spend a day in the Redwood Forest on Thursday, what should we do? We want to see the valley of the giants and maybe do a walk. Please give us suggestions on where to stay & what is a must see;)

Many thanks!!!

Here is your thread from the Portland forum about this trip:

I gave you some suggestions on your posting in the California forum yesterday but you have since deleted your question. I wonder if you saved the link I gave you?

There are three main areas with redwoods. There is Jedediah Smith near Crescent city, there is Drury scenic parkway between Crescent city amd Eureka. Then there is the Avenue of the Giants that is South of Eureka.

You may want to check out the three different areas and decide which is more appealing to you. Then base where you stay the night on which area you want to visit more. If you want to spend a lot more time exploring the ave of the Giants, then driving straight to Eureka might be the best choice.

But is if Fern Canyon, Lady Bird Johnson Grove, tall trees Trail, howland hill rd, the Boy Scout tree etc. all look interesting to you, then you might want to stay closer to crescent city or klamath so you have more time to explore the redwood areas north of Eureka.
