Hello all -
My husband and I are planning a trip to Ireland in September 2012, staying at the Quay House in Clifden for 7 nights. The reason we're staying in the same place for 7 nights (instead of travelling around, as is the usual tourist practice) is that I'm going to be researching my 4th book, a whodunit-type murder mystery, and I hope to talk with some locals, get some good insights, etc.
My question is this: we've planned our trip for September 8-15, 2012, but I believe the Clifden Arts Festival starts on September 20, 2012. Should we change our Quay House reservation so that we're staying during the Arts Festival, or will it be too busy and full of tourists for me to spend some "quality time" with the locals, asking questions, etc.?
This is primarily a research trip for me - and since we live in the U.S., it'll be my only opportunity to research a novel set in Ireland - but there are a few "vacation-y" things we'd like to do: hear some trad music is one, ride Connemara ponies is another.
So, are the 9/8-15/2012 dates good, or should we change them? I have no idea what the Clifden Arts Festival involves, or what its impact is on parking, finding a table at restaurants, etc.
I'd be glad for any insight at all.
Incidentally, check out www.katymcdermott.com if you'd like information about my writing.
Thanks in advance!
P.S. In my book, I have no plans to paint Clifden in anything other than a glowing light, I assure you!
