Hi

Anyone have recommendations for quality accommodation for two people in the Ripon/Thirsk area?

What price bracket are you looking at . Hotel,b and b ,self catering ?. Are you hiring a car and what are you wanting to do when you are here.

We will just be looking to poke around the area- we'll have a car, and ideally the budget would be under 100 GPB per night. We would be looking at 2 to 4 nights, which might make B&B easier to come by. If a B&B, then somewhere with a nice pub or eating option nearby would be good.

I last visited the area about 20 years ago but am keen to return. Loved the Dales, Fountains Abbey, etc.

If you want to stay near Fountain Abbey Take a look at Maggie Johnstones at Mallard Grange.

Any particular reason for Ripon/Thirsk? Neither are in the Dales although it is a good location to go and explore. But neither Ripon nor Thirsk are particularly touristy areas so there's a smaller amount of 'quality' accommodation around. If you were asking me the same question for the Dales I could give you a load of places to research.

I can however recommend North Dockenbush in Brearton which is nearer Harrogate than Ripon but the location would be ideal to explore the Dales and Fountains if you didn't want to stay in the Dales themselves.

Brearton has the excellent Malt Shovel Inn, a favourite of ours (we live close by).

Harrogate is also a lovely place to vist - a spa town with the famous Betty's tearooms, good shopping, restaurants etc, and Harlow Carr on the outskirts.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We will be enroute from Barnsley to Cumbria, and looking to avoid the larger towns, hence the choice of location. Mallard looks very enticing..
