Nuremberg, Bamberg, Wurzberg, Rothenberg

We will be travelling from Frankfurt to Nuremberg, Bamberg, Wurzberg, and Rothenberg in April. We have one week's time to spend there. Would like to know where to make the base is the most convenient. We will be taking public transport, trains.

Nuremberg makes a good base because it is a rail hub so you can easily get to all of the other towns. Also, because Nuremberg is larger, there is a reasonable amount going on at night too.

DO BEWARE of spelling.Rothenberg is a place, but not the same place as Rothenburg. You can take a train to either place from Nuremberg, so watch out when buying a ticket or checking train times.

Either Würzburg or Nuremberg will work as a convenient base town; from either, it's roughly an hour to each of the other destinations by local train.

It will likely cost you less from Nuremberg, however. Since daytrips from there to Rothenburg and Bamberg are within the VGN travel zone, they can be done with the VGN Tagesticket Plus (daypass) for €17.50 per day.

(If you get this daypass on Saturday, it's valid on Sunday as well.)

Then your trip to Würzburg will be €27 with the Bayern Ticket:

Total for 3 daytrips = €62 (or €44.50 if W'burg and R'burg are done on Sat and Sun.)

If you stay in Würzburg, all your day trips would best be done with a Bayern Ticket - so that would run you €81 total for three separate day trips.
