There isn't much to see, bar MSM itself, the view from MSM, lots of tourist trap shops and eateries and the Abbey.

Mont St Michel is Mont St Michel, there's nothing more to say. You must have read about it to decide to go there.

Bonjour, Kakking,

You may want to look at "Main Events" and "Places to Visit" in the following link:

I would rethink the return time of 5:20 and perhaps return at an earlier time.

you arrive at the base of the Mont and then walk in a crowded line up the center tourist hell crowded with souvenir shops and food shops up steps towards the Abbey and then into the Abbey to tour it. When we were there, there was a lovely rainbow over the mud flats that surround the Mont --

you can try going up the side trails, but they will also be basically lines marching up as well.

IMHO the best thing about MSM is the view of it across the field in the distance -- a magical sight.

I found the tiny hillside village cemetery very moving. The thought that in this tiny plot were centuries of people who lived and died on MSM. Only a few families but well represented over time.

The higher you go the fewer people. There are even little side alleys with hardly anyone and that is a sharp contrast to the overcrowded entrance and lower main street of the village.

Avoid the little museums (I forget the names) like the one with the statue in armour outside, those are just tourist traps.

For me to best experience the place is to sleep on the Mont overnight but since you can't just go with the flow and try to find those quieter or less busy little places away from the main street.

Here is some inspiration for your visit to the Mont-Saint-Michel:

Some of these replies underline the advantage of a guide wherever you are. Before you get to the mount you can visit the dam which gives great views tot he mount has has panels explaining haow it will work to clear away the silt when the dyke has gone.

You don't have to fight your way up the main street. You can go to the left before going into the village and go up a quite lane past an old windmill and past the ramp that leads up to the "mouse" wheel inside the abbey. Or you can go up the steps just in side the gate du Roy then turn tight to cross the gate du Roy and walk up the top of the first defenses built before the barbican. Or turn left at the top of the steps to walk up on top of the ramparts built during the hundred years war. Or you can turn left just after the post office which was the first Mere Poulard restaurant, and go up a narrow stair case. You will pass Annie Poulards house and the hairdressers that is no longer working. You'll go by the very small cemetery and can visit the parish church of St Pierre.

All that before getting into the eighth wonder of the world. Human guided visits are included in the entry fee to the abbey. Ask at the ticket desk if there will be one within a reasonable time remembering that you have another 10 mins climbing to the top where they start. If there isn't one, pay for an audio guide..

It's amazing how many people never venture of the main tourist filled street and find any of these little side detours mentioned by cpmac, where there are no crowds. Even when the main street is packed it is possible to find quieter spaces on the Mont.

Here is our visit to MSM a few Octobers ago -- note how uncrowded it is in late fall.

The picture at the head of the piece of the goat grazing in the salt meadows with SMS in the distance is the way I like to remember the trip.
