My Fiance (who is Canadian), two other friends and I are going to France for the weekend of 24th - 26th of May. Our purpose is to go to Vimy Ridge etc however I was thinking that it would be really great to get a guide to show us around the area and tell us the history of Vimy Ridge and the surrouding area, however I am having difficulty finding one. Has anyone else ever hired a guide? Or gone through a company for a tour? I know that you can get tunnel tours through the Canadian memorial, however I wasn't sure how much information you actually got from that. Any assistance/recommendations would be very much appreciated!!

Hi there,

The free tours of the tunnels at Vimy Ridge are very interesting. They are led by Canadian students who have obviously learned a lot about the subject.

The small modern visitor centre at Vimy has displays showing how the battle was planned, and also some interesting panels to read that describe how tunnelling was carried out during WWI.

The tourist office of Arras organises a weekly guided tour to the Artois battlefields, including Vimy. It is led by a bilingual guide, so commentary is in French and English.

I have not expoerienced these myself, but if you want more information, or to book, you could contact:

Arras Tourist Information Office,

Hotel de Ville,

Place des Héros

62000 Arras, FRANCE

Tél. +33 (0)3 21 51 26 95 ; Fax +33 (0)3 21 71 07 34

Email: arras.tourisme@wanadoo.fr

Website http://www.ot-arras.fr/

(I typed VIMY into the search box to find details of the tour.)

The guided tours are on Saturdays, leaving Arras by coach at 2pm, and returning there at 6pm. Cost is 38 euros per adult. Book on the above tourist office number.

Or if you wanted to book a personal tour guide for your own visit, the tourist office would be a good place to start, I am sure.
