Car Hire

We want to hire a auto car in August 2012 from Toulouse and travel to Sarlat before catching the fast train to Paris.

We have 2+ weeks in time. Need advise on where to drop off car and what company is the best to deal with.

Leaving the car in Sarlat, or taking it back to Toulouse?

Driveaway is a company that arranges cheap rentals with the major companies: www.driveaway.com.au

There is no fast train from Sarlat to anywhere. Public transport to and from Sarlat is an absolute pain, so you certainly don't want to drop a car there.

You can get driving directions, rather optimistic times, and estimated costs (fuel and tolls) from www.viamichelin.com

You will easily pick up a hire car from one of the major companies (eg Europcar, Avis, Hertz) at either Toulouse airport or train station. The airport is located on the outskirts north of Toulouse, so it would be easier to drive out towards Sarlat from there (a bit over 2 hours drive approx). As Sydneynick said, there's no TGV fast train from Sarlat itself, so you'd be best to consider taking the car an hour further north to Brive and dropping it off there, for either a train or flight to Paris. Alternatively, you could drive it an hour west to Bergerac & then train (via Bordeaux) or flight to Paris from there.
