I had talked with Virginia while arranging the tour about what we wanted to see so I think she can accommodate whatever you request. We were only with her for two hours but she showed us where the Etruscan Museum is located and encouraged us to visit it in the afternoon. She did take us all over town, various churches as well as the duomo, the roman theatre and up to the fortezza. We also visited the only working alabaster workshop inside the walls.

I can't really recommend a hotel in Volterra because the one we stayed at was a disappointment: Hotel Villa Porto Al Arco. The location was great but it is very definitely a 3 star and had a few extra quirks, but was inexpensive so may be fine for some folks.

It is a few years now, but we stayed at that hotel and quite enjoyed it. It is decorated in a country style, had fabulous breakfasts in the garden and also had parking.

Yes, normally it is possible, but there are no so much bus going from Cecina to volterra, so You must have a look.

Volterra by private guide is the way to go! My friend and I read about one in Rick Steve's book that departs outside the alabaster shop next to the bus drop-off every evening. No reservations necessary and only 10 euros per person. We learned so much about the history of this ancient town. We'd love to go back one day! Our guide was Franc and while from France originally he lives in Volterra now and it's obvious how much he loves his adopted town.
