Viareggio or Torre Del Lago for Gay Visitors? Where to stay

Viareggio seems to have all the accommodation but Torre Del Lago the nightlife. Is it easy to get between the 2 towns? If you stay in Viareggio and go out it Torre Del Lago, can you get back easily if late at night? Any tips for where to go and where to stay?
