Trains and trips from Viareggio.

Hi. I'd be grateful for any help.

We're staying in the Grand Hotel Royal and hope to see some of the surrounding area eg Pisa, Lucca and also a day trip to Florence. How near is the hotel to the train station and how easy is it to get trains to these places?

Also, we'd welcome suggestions for other easy trips to interesting places out of town (we'll be using public transport) and also things to do in Viareggio itself. Organised excursions are not out of the question either.

Many thanks in advance.

Would also appreciate advice on how we might go to Vernazza for the day......want to savour the quintessential Cinque Terre village. Is the train service good fromViareggio? By boat? Is it reasonable size boat.....don't like "rocky seas"!

Public transport to Siena and San Giminano ?

To the Cinque Terre, there are a few direct trains to Monterosso taking under one hour. To the other villages, you must change trains in la Spezia and most connections take a little more than an hour. See http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html for the current timetable, using a date this week to see all fares as most are NA online more than seven days in advance.

There are direct day trips by boat in August and probably in the first two weeks of September. See http://www.navigazionegolfodeipoeti.it/ much nearer the time, You can look at pictures of the boats on the website now, though it doesn't say which are used on Viareggio trips.

Would also appreciate advice about Viareggio to Portofino trains or boats. I think that one would have to go to Rapallo by train changing at La Spezia, and by local bus from Rapallo to Portofino via Santa Marguarita Ligure. Is this right?

Would also appreciate advice about public transport from Viareggio to Siena, please.

Use http://www.trenitalia.com/homepage_en.html

There are several direct trains from Viareggio to Santa Margherita Ligure, and a couple more to Rapallo. Otherwise you will need to change.

Boats to Portofino go from Rapallo and Santa Margherita http://www.traghettiportofino.it/ and the direct buses go from Santa Margherita www.tigulliotrasporti.it/cartina2.php?sez=TOc

Trains to Siena require a change at Empoli and sometimes also at Pisa.
