Fast train from Rome Termini to Naples Central. Go down into the station basement and take the suburban Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, then a bus to Positano.

It will take at least 3.5 hours from Rome - just so you are aware of travel time - that is an approximate and it can take longer, depending on train connections, traffic on the coastal road while on the bus etc.

Rosemary, on the top right of this page you will see the box titled Top Questions about Positano - and there are 2 very good posts about transportation from Rome to Positano. Taking the fast train to Salerno and then ferry from Salerno to Positano is also an option if you are going during the busy season.

I also recommend the fast train from Rome to Naples. However, the train from Naples to Sorrento can be like starring in a humorous foreign film. It stops in every little town and is full of musicians, beggars, and loud, smoking locals. (We found it charming but our train broke down and we still laugh about standing in a grafitti-covered train yard waiting for a replacement). If possible, pay a taxi or car service to drive you to Positano. They will give you a price up front and you may be able to negotiate for a stop in Pompei. It was easy to find car services once in Positano and we negotiated a ride all the way back to Naples. By the way, Positano is worth EVERY BIT of effort it takes to get there....paradise and the friendliest people ever!

Take a through train to SALERNO, not Naples. Then walk 800 meters to the Concordia Dock and take the ferry boat to Positano.

10. Re: travelling from rome to positano in June

I am also looking to do this route in late May. Is it simple to find a taxi at the Positano ferry dock to in turn reach our villa? Or will we need to arrange the taxi in advance?

Many thanks!
