La Spezia city buses depart from Viale Garibaldi for Portovenere – Two per hour, takes half an hour, €1,45. Buy the ticket at the tabacchi.

From the La Spezia train station, exit left, go downhill, follow the street to the first square, S. Bon, and continue down Via Fiume to Piazza Garibaldi. Turn right at the fountain onto Viale Garibaldi. After the first light, the bus for Portovenere departs on the right side of the street. Bus stop 11P just past Corso Cavour.

sydneynick, could you help me out? Just how IS the parking in Portovenere? My daughter and I will be traveling there in the afternoon via rental car mid September.

From what I've read here there isn't much parking in order to take the ferry from La Spezia and the bus doesn't sound like an easy solution either. Thanks

Just drive to Portovenere and park when you get there. Shouldn't be much problem parking there in September, particularly if you are not going at the weekend.

We caught the bus and found it an interesting and good service. Views were great and the bus was cheap- if you are staying a few days you can buy a six or eight pass which makes it even cheaper. Great way to get to and from la Spezia.

You were correct, parking in Porto Venere was no problem at all. In fact had we continued driving down to the docs we would have found a closer spot than we had...but as many others do, you grab one when you see one. :)

P.S. LOVED Porto Venere, wish we had spent more time strolling. :(

Have read the post on travel from La Spezia to Portovenere

We want to travel in reverse - from Portovenere to La Spezia to catch a train to Rome. How often do buses run & how much time do we need to allow to get to the train station. How far is the bus stop from the train station or does the bus drop off at the station? Are the bus times reliable & can I go ahead & book a train to Rome on the morning we want to travel & feel confident there will be a connecting bus.

Thanks so much for any advice.

See reply #2: your journey is the same but in reverse. If you are worried about not catching a particular train, don't book in advance. Except perhaps in the last half of August, trains do not sell out.

Wow thanks for prompt reply!

When arriving in La Spezia does the bus stop at the main train station where you catch the trains for Rome?

If not is there a long walk involved? We will have reasonable sized bags.

We will be joining an organised tour of Italy with Globus on the day we leave Portovenere & can't afford to miss the train connection.

Thanks for your advice
