Why Marsala?.

Ciao Vagabonda:

In our recent Public Transport request and your delightfully detailed reply, we noted our stopping in Marsala. You advised, 'why Marsala/'. We hail from a wine district in Australia and wish to effect a pilgrimage to a noted Sicilian Wine District. Also interested in the Phoenician artifacts in the Museum. However, if you can advise of a more appropriate stopping place. Selinunte? Trapani? that would enable us to achieve our aims. That would be absolutely great. However, although Marsala may not be that attractive, it may also be a non-tourist destination. That would have some merit.

We thank you for your helpful comments.

Welcome to Sicily kathrine_we!

Marsala is filled with cantine and enoteche, but you could also learn about Sicilian wines in the vineyards and agriturismi throughout the countryside – Alcamo would be another area to visit, and there are some excellent smaller producers around Mazara del Vallo.

Trapani and Marsala both have charming historic centres - Trapani is a local town, a fishing town, where real people live and work. Trapani is low on sights, but a good base for day excursions on public transport.

Marsala would be the better town to learn about wines – Because of the wine trade, Marsala is a business town.

Hopefully you will also stay in an agriturismo that produces wines....

You might especially enjoy lunch and tasting at the Planeta winery in Sambuca di Sicilia.
