Back from our DIY livigno 8 days skiing. Here are the main learning points!!
TOM TOM SAT NAV - we are no longer speaking. Updated all maps for Italy the evening before etc and when we arrive at Linate the entire country was deleted!! NO ITALY- it no longer exists!! So a bit of a headache getting out of linate. Prob my poor navigation skills.
CAR HIRE - You get what you pay for! Budget Car Hire was ok. Snow chains included. Car was Kia Ceed. 1.4. But not that comfortable for a long drive.
Apartment - Self booked - or though I had. The day before we flew out I got an emails saying apartment had been let! ( It was entirely my mistake) I rang Jacguie at Mountain Tours and within 15 min had a good apartment nr Galli market. Thanks Jacquie. I should have booked with her in the first place! If we DIY again I will def use Mountain Tours.
Apartment Joseph - Near Galli market. You could ski back from either 18 or 19. Nice comfortable apartment.
SKIS - used Hotel Capriolo opposite lift 17. Excellent price though we all though the boots had seen a lot of action. But 8 days hire for boots, skis and helmet all for 70 Euros for each adult and 46 for a child - it was economical.
Ski School - used lift 18 Galli Fed. Excellent, though only one main class at 10.30am - no 9.30am class due to poor numbers! Though you had the option of paying for an extra early lesson from 9.30 -10.30.
HOTELS - we had a night in Dublin at Premier Inn at the Airport. Room was excellent. Booked room for a night and parking (10 nights) online for £100 (transfer 1 euro per adult and kids free)
In Livi we stayed the first night (Fri) at Hotel Parre. It was great downstair but the rooms - very poor - boards under the mattress bc the springs were dead! Shower head was hanging off! Great breakfast and nice lounge and health suit. But rooms terrible.
On return from Livi we stayed a night at the Linate Novatel great room and breakfast with an 11.40am flight back to Dub it was a relaxing Sunday morning.
It was great having 8 days skiing. Saturday skiing is excellent as the runs are nearly empty! At the start of the week it was compacted and icy on the lower slopes but a good fall at the start of the week really helped. The week just got better with some great skiing on both sides. (not that I'm the star of the family).
Food was good - mostly Marco's, Bellavista and the hotel at the bottom of 18. An excellent steak at La scalla - though a bit pricey!
Livigno was quiet. Most locals commented on the down turn in the ski season. Didn't notice a big difference in prices. Soft drinks are outrageous but beer and wine seemed ok. Food was up a bit. Had a small beer in Novatel Milan and it was 7 euros!!!
Aqua Grand - If you get a complimentary ticket don't upgrade when you arrive at the centre for the wellness area. The main pool- the black pool - has a rest area with free juice and fruit, a sauna and steam room - the downs stair wellsness area offers a more up market floral sauna, a few more health dips and an extra health pool. All for 20 euros! The upstairs has everything you need unless you are really into your european wellness! Nice bar area upstair for everyone. A pleasant couple of hours rest.
Driving: Linate to Livi was great once we got on the ring road. Pleasant drive up on a friday afternoon. Driving back late last Sat was hard work esp near Milan. It seemed as if all italians drive like maniacs!! (Austria and Germany was a joy!) The ring road at Milan was terrible. Even the kids felt the tension from the front of the car! I would have to think seriously if I was ever going to drive from Milan again! I may never recover! LOL.
A great 8 days skiing - and for that we had some early starts and crazy driving but that is the cost of DIY hols. If you want door to door then go with a travel company. We all enjoyed Livigno this year Cost wise... flights, car hire, extra nights at hotels, apartment and petrol... we prob got an 8 days on the slopes ski holiday for the price of an apartment holiday with an agent.
Haven't decided about next year! Livigno has great food, nice people, a lovely place with lots of snow but a long transfer from Milan is the down side. Might look at flight to Innsbruck?
Thanks for all the advice.
