We will be vacationing in Piedmont in October and will be using four bases: Cuneo, Alba, Ivrea and Turin. We will be in Ivrea for two full days. Can anyone suggest places to see and things to do within an hour's drive of Ivrea or a little more. We like easy hiking, historic towns and good Piemontese food. Are Ceresole Reale (one day) and Val di Gressoney (the second day) good choices?

Those are great choices, but you would skip Ivrea's beautiful surroundings - the five lakes, the Serra (Europe's largest glacial moraine), perhaps the village of Andrate and Mount Mombarone....

You see, Piedmont is a large region and has so many interesting things to see that you might want to limit yourself to its Northern (or SOuthern) part and come back another time to see the rest... (especially if you don';t have much time).

I want to stop at Ivrea on my way to Aosta by train. I will not have a vehicle. If I stay near the lake, how far is it into town? Could I walk it or is there public transport? If I stay right in the town would you think there would be enough to interest me for more than one day? Do you know if there are any hiking opportunities for day walks where I can start and finish near the town?
