Is Terres Basses a better area to stay than Orient Beach?

Going to st. martin in April or May and trying to figure out best place to stay on island. We will be two kids with us, ages 4 and 6, and want to be close to calm beach. Can't decide whether we should get a villa in Terres Basses or Orient Beach area. Is Anse Marcal a good area? Any reccommendations would be helpful.

Certainly more daytime action on Orient, easy access to dining options, more laid back in Terres Basses - Anse Marcel more remote - all have their +/-.

While this is just one mans opinion and you will find differing opinions out here, we love Terres Basses for a number of reasons. First, it's pretty central with great restaurants nearby in either direction(Marigot or Maho/Simpson Bay). It's upscale and secure. Viila's are typically multi-acre walled compounds with beautiful pools that become a major part of any vacation. Just make sure pool has a low end for the kids as we did stay in one that was 5 feet deep at its lowest point. Ok for our group of adults but maybe not for kids. SXM has many beautiful beaches to explore. Best beaches for children your age would be Pinel Island, Friars and Galeon. You should go to all three of them in a week. While I would not call Orient rough, it's rolling waves could be challenging for your youngest. Certainly go to Orient for a day as it has every beach activity you could want.

I love Orient Beach area but we have rented a villa the last 2 yrs in Terra Basses and loved the area. There are two great beaches within walking distance and it's location is perfect to go to either the French side or Dutch. Very good security which makes you feel safer than the Orient Beach area. The beaches in Terra Basses are so much more quieter. Day trips to Orient Beach are easy..
