Local ferry for Telemark Canal

We are flying into Oslo in mid July. What is the best way to explore the Telemark Canal. Is it possible to get local ferry"s to hop on and off at towns along the way and also which towns would be worth stopping at

We also are planning to hit some of the coastal towns on the way to Bergen, any thoughts on this area would also be welcomed...thanks

The best way to explore the Telemark canal is with one of the canal ferries (unless you have your own boat or kayak). Some info here: www.visittelemark.com/The-Telemark-canal

There is one ferry daily sailing the full lenght of the canal from Skien to Dalen, the trip takes 8,5-10hrs. Possible to hop on or off, but the towns along the canal are not really interesting. In Dalen you may stay the night and return to Skien by bus next day.

The southern coast of Norway is a popular summer holiday destination for Norwegians, most visitors from other countries are more interested in the mountains and fjords of central and western Norway. But there are some nice towns to visit, Risør, Arendal, Grimstad, Lillesand, Kristiansand, Farsund, and of course, Stavanger, to name a few. Here's som tourist info:

Norway has few canals, this one is also narrow and can accomodate only small boats.

mbear,

I have sent a response to your personal pm.

I assume that you either have a car or will rent one ?

You can find all about the Telemark Canal here:

http://www.telemarkskanalen.no/eng/

8 days is a short time to cover some long distances. Arrival in Oslo - the tour - and where do you leave from ?

The southern coastal area does not have any of the spectacular fjords, and for mountain scenery you will have to go inland. Another option is to go via Haukeli (part of the Hardangervidda mountain plateau and massif) to Hardanger:

http://www.hardangerfjord.com/en/

Go via Odda to Voss and then continue to Bergen, from where you can do the Sognefjorden tours.

Then return to Oslo via Lærdal and Filefjell \ Valdres.

Hope this helps, and please do ask if you have any further questions.

We are in southern Norway at the moment if you want to travel on the Telemark Canal it is highly recommended to pre book your tickets as it is very busy this time of year.

We are currently staying in Risor, in our opinion the area is well worth a visit, stunning scenery even if it is not all mountains and fjords.
