Hi, I'm 20 and will be flying to visit my partner in Oslo for 2 wks, and so far can't decide where would be best for us to stay. We're looking for something nice & modern, that won't kill the mood.. but we don't have a huge budget to work with either.

The hotels we've been considering are: Best Western Anker Hotel, Thon Hotel Munch, Thon Hotel Gyldenløve, and Best Western Bondeheimen Hotel.

My concerns are that photos don't display how things really are, and there's the twin bed problem I've heard about. Just wondering if anyone can recommend the best option for us?

Thanks in advance. Cheers!

Hi Auslo,

I live in Oslo and obviously I don't stay in any hotel. However, have you tried to use the search engine on this forum for reviews and traveller's own photos ?

Yeah, I've done as much hunting as I possibly can, checked out all the photos and reviews.. that's how I narrowed it down to those 4. I was just hoping that someone might be able to narrow it further. I think it's really between the Anker and the Munch.. one is in a better part of town, but the other you get free breakfast. I'm just hopeless at making decisions, I guess :P Thanks for the reply though!

A free breakfast is usually included in all Norwegian hotels. Looking at the reviews, it also appears that Much offers breakfast included in the room rate.

Munch is in a better area, and you will only have a 10 minute walk to the main parts of the city.

The area around Anker is quite mixed. You may see a couple of slobs having a beer in the park, they wont harm anyone. If you walk along the river at night, you might be offered some mariuana.(don't know if that's a good or bad thing for you, :-)). I have been working nearby for years and never had any issues at all.

If you're on a budget, this is one of the best areas to stay. You have plenty of cheap asian and other restaurants nearby, and there is a grocery just across the street. You also have a few internet cafes around.

You can walk to city center in 10-15 minutes, or take the tram or bus just outside. Trendy Grunerløkka with many cafes, bars, shops and parks is 10 minutes walk from here, or take the tram.

I personally recommend Bondeheimen. The hotel is close to "everything". It is not far from the trendy clubs that are around the area or restraunts you can find at Aker Brygge, Karl Johan (the main street in Oslo), the Royal Palace, and it is close to public transportation.

Don't worry about beds. If the room has twin beds they aren't bolted to the floor so you can push them together.

We stayed at the Bondeheimen about 18 months ago and our room had a double with twin duvets.

The hotel was in need of refurbishment but may have been done by now. But if all you need is a budget hotel, it will be fine and the location is excellent.

HTH. :)

"Twin beds problem"?

All it means (in my experience of staying in hotels in Norway, and I've stayed in a few!) is that two single beds are fastened together, so you actually have a 'proper' 2 person wide bed, as opposed to a double (which are often smaller). And naturally you have two quilts, so no 'discussions' about the other person nicking all the quilt! :-D

HI! I, too, have been looking for accommodation as my husband and I will be in Norway next year. Those hotels that the others have recommended, although good, are rather expensive I think. What about staying at the youth hostels? There is also another hotel that I have been looking at called Cochs Pensjonat that looks pretty good. Have a look at that one! They have value rooms at NOK 580 for a twin room (again you can push beds together!)

My husband and I will be going to Norway next year and I have been looking for good, affordable accommodation. I am finding that in Norway it is going to be expensive but I think you can find cheaper places to stay other than the ones recommended. I have been looking at a place in Oslo called Cochs Pensjonat. For NOK580 you can get a value twin room. (You can push the beds together!!)
