Best way to see Norway's most famous fjords

I want to see Norway's most famous fjords [Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord (on World Heritage list), Aurlandsfjord, Naeroyfjord (on the World Heritage list), Hardangerfjord and Nordfjord] and glaciers [Folgefonna and Briksdal].

What is the best way to see these spots. I am willing to splurge on what I hope will be a trip of a lifetime. I am not adverse to small tour groups.

Other posts indicate the Hurtiguten cruise does not visit these fjords.

I am hoping to do this trip in June or July 2010.

Hurtigruten does not bring you *into* these fjords, expect Geiranger northbound in summer.

The places you mention are great, but a bit far apart. Because they are relatively similar, perhaps consider focusing on fewer places. If you want to cover all, perhaps you need to rent a car and do self-drive (which is a very nice way to visit these places).

SDGypsy,

It would help us to give you advice if you told us how much time you plan to spend on this vacation?

4. Re: Best way to see Norway's most famous fjords

Thank you for your assistance. I do not have to see all the fjords and/or both of the glaciers I listed. Especially, if some are less impressive than others. Which ones would you consider in the "must see" category.

My only concern about driving is the fact that I am a single female and this might not be the safest way to proceed. For this reason I am open to a quality tour group with a reasonable limit on the number in the group (no more than 20). Unfortunately, my research so far has no revealed a tour group that seems to meet my request. However, I recognize I am not an expert when it comes to tour groups.

If this is not the best place to post this inquiry, please advise where I should post my question. I am hoping to get as many responses as possible.

Again, thank you for your help.

For specific tours/operators, try to contact the touristinformation Bergen

I would not worry to much about security. The Norwegian countryside is possibly the safest place travel. You can also go by public transport, althoug this gives less flexibility (and few departures daily).

The most accessible glaciers are arms of the greater Jostedalsbreen glacier, popular access points at Briksdal (Nordfjord), Fjærland (Sognefjord) and Nigardsbreen (Jostedalen).

Nordfjord or Sognefjord include some of the greatest fjord branches (Hardanger and Geiranger is relativley similar), photos:

SDGypsy,

Renting a car in Norway is expensive. You will be able to reach most of the places you want to visit by public transport and there is no need to join a tourgroup either, but it will require a bit of planning from your side. We can also try to help you as best as we can.

You may be able to pick up some tips on what to see and do from these recent previous posts as they contain some helpful links and discussions around the Sognefjord area:

We have had very good luck having Brekke Tours and Travel (tours@brekketours.com) plan our trips for us. They have small group tours on specific dates, or will book hotels, rental cars, airfare, etc. for independent travel. Borton Travel is another group that plans Scandinavian trips of all kinds. Both agencies are based in the U.S. (in Minnesota), where many descendants of Norwegian immigrants live. The Hurtigruten is a great way to see a lot of beautiful scenery, and the trip up Geiranger Fjord and back is truly spectacular. The ship also takes a run into the very short Trollfjord, and every time my husband and I have been there, the experience has been magical. But then, all of Norway is magical! The advantage of taking an arranged tour is that everything is paid for in advance, Norway is very expensive!
