Accommodation in Hochgurgl |
|
I've finall y settled on Hochgurgl for our annual ski trip in March, but can't decide on which hotel. The choices are Riml, Sporthotel olymp & Angerer Alm. I'm travelling with 2 children so will need a family room. Ideally we'd like doorstep skiing, a decent size pool & accommodation that's not too much of a squeeze. Can anyone help? |

I have not been to any of the places by now, but just in case you haven´t found them so far, here are their websites, if this any help: www.hotel-riml.com/index.php?id=260&L=4 http://www.olymphotel.at/en/hotel.html http://www.hotel-angereralm.at/hotel_en.html To me, Riml looks liek the most "luxurious" of the places, followed by Angerer Alm. Olymp seems to be the only one with a specific kids program, Riml calls itself kidsfriendly as well, which is not always the case for hotels that advertise their wellness area, their gourmet restaurant and their indoor golf range, whereas I couldn´t see anything specific about kids offers on the page of Angereralm. If you want to book there, you might want to ask about that in davance, Austrian hotels of that category and this emphasis on wellness aren´t automaticly known for their child-friendliness. Not sure if this helps much, but I am sure some others might know more about the places ! Greets, Fritz

Thanks Fritz. I agree that the Rimll looks the best. It appears that it's the only one that actually offers doorstep skiing. Also thanks for the advice about the children, I hadn't even thought about any hotel not really welcoming them. Mine are too old for kids clubs, but welcome other children to hang out with. Of course The Riml is also the most expensive! What do you think about the skiing in Hochgurgl? I was originally attracted to Obergurgl (nice & high, not too far from Innsbruck airport) but on looking at the piste map it appears that the majority of runs are in Hochgurgl. Would you think it's a good choice. We're really only interested in the skiing, not nightlife or shopping etc.

I had a look at the slope-map now, and I would say they are 50/50 divided between the resorts, and the two halfs of it are linked by this long "TOP EXPRESS" cable car anway, and its one skilift-pass for both of them, so I would say it doesn´t make the big difference for you, the lower part of the resort probaly enjoys more other activities then skiing, but if thats not yours anyway .... After last years crazy warm winter I would say every meter you can get higher up a mountain is good ! Regarding the childrens thing: I didn´t want to say that they might not be welcoming to your kids, but resorts with a wellness or gourmet focus sometimes tend to have house policys like not allowing kids under a certain age to use the pool without their parents beeing there, or you might get some strange looks at dinner from other guests if your kiddies are a bit of the active sort. Its wasn´t really a big thing at all before a hotel-ownwer from Salzburg last season decided to have a minimum age policy of I think 14 years for his guests, and the media made this a huge topic with big public discussions, but that has calmed down mostly over the summer ! Greetings, fritz

I think we'll try the Riml in Hochgurgl. It caters for children, is very high & even has an inhouse ski hire shop. Will make a report upon out return. Let's hope it snows in March! Thank you for all your help.

Hi. I have stayed at the Angerer Alm twice, with my family, and it is a lovely hotel to which I would happily return. Of the three hotels you mention, I would say that the Riml is the best placed: nearest to the ski school meeting place and an easy walk to the main lift. As for the skiing, I have also stayed in Obergurgl and I slightly prefer the skiing on the Hochgurgl side, although it is easy (indeed a pleasure) to take the gondola between the two. There will be new lifts on both sides this season.

Went to Angerer Alm last year and enjoyed Hochgurgl so much that we are returning again this year but going to Olymp Sporthotel for a change. Angerer Alm is just across the road from the Grosse Karbhan chair so very convenient (I've posted a picture indicating how close). Food and service at the hotel was excellent and the only reason for not staying at the same hotel this year was that we wanted to try somewhere different. As we are off in two weeks time I can give a better appreciation of the differences on my return. Hope this will not be too late for your trip. You have, however, in my opinion picked an excellent resort as long as you're not after massses of night life - there's not much going on in the evenings.
